"The Bureau of Reclamation built the dam (on the Payette River) as part of the Black Canyon Irrigation Project. Construction began in 1942, was interrupted by the World War II, resumed in 1946 and was completed two years later. The highway and railroad were relocated but three village sites were inundated." - Cort Conley in "Idaho for the curious/a guide," Backeddy Books, Cambridge, Idaho. 1982.
